The Hippie Dictionary event with John McCleary in Monterey

Author of The Hippie Dictionary, John McCleary, hosted 130 Belgians on tour of the California coast on their 72 Harley Davidson motorcycles. From April 18 to April 29 a tour group rode from San Francisco to Los Angeles and Las Vegas on a 1600 mile music and pop culture tour. On Sunday, April 21, 2013, Mr. McCleary showed Monterey Pop at their hotel conference room and gave the Belgians the lowdown on the movie and our California counterculture scene of the 1960s and 70s.

The tour was sponsored by a Belgian radio station, Classic 21, and Bike to Beach, a Belgian motorcycle club. The station is the biggest classic rock programmer in their country, with 400,000 listeners per day, and is called “bikers’ radio.” After the movie and discussion, the group of travelers converged on the Cannery Row Brewing Company for music and dancing to Monterey’s local hippie band, The Cachagua Playboys. The party was not private, and the brew pub was open to the public as usual, with everyone invited to enjoy the band’s gig from 9:00 pm ‘til all hours.
